Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman is about doing the best you can while growing up poor. Playing the hand your dealt and forging a path for yourself in a troubling world full of confusion and unfairness.
I really liked this book and think the mixed reviews on Goodreads are too harsh. The author crafts a portrait of hard times and trailer park life, but also manages to infuse likability and hope into the jagged thoughts of the adolescent main character, Rory Hendrix.
